Our approach to Community Engagement
Shaped by the Wellbeing of Future Generations Wales Goals, Hale’s approach towards Social Value is to improve existing provisions within our communities, by working with local stakeholders. Led by Hale’s Dionne Herbert, we assess local need, and invest our time, resources, and funding into grassroots led initiatives which amplifies the difference made to the lives of individuals and groups surrounding our projects.
Community Projects
Dionne collaborates with a broad network of local charities and community groups to extend our reach and maximise community impact. Our initiatives are always needs‑led and informed by the feedback received from local stakeholders.
Examples:
Groundworks at Whitmore High School, Barry, enabling the school to install a grant-funded outdoor learning centre for pupils with alternative learning needs.
Installation of a kitchen at Raven House Trust. The charity provides food bank facilities and a warm space for the Newport community.
Arts and Culture
To celebrate the vibrancy and multiculturalism within our local communities, we work with charities and community impact groups, to create meaningful legacy arts and culture projects.
Examples:
Through collaborations with Tanio Cymru, we’ve provided several community-led mosaics, hand made by local residents.
Working with Live Music Now at our Devonshire Place site, historic pupils from the former Lower Dyffryn School, created a song shaped by memories of their time at the school.
Health and wellbeing
To create healthier and more resilient communities, Dionne prioritises investment into grassroots-led sport, improving accessible and green spaces, and supporting mental health charities. This promotes social connection and wellbeing, physical fitness, and mental health, whilst reducing isolation.
Examples:
Provision of accessible fishing lecterns at Lliswerry Pond and a multi-sensory room for Sense (charity for individuals living with complex needs).
Donating labour and materials to create a Community Garden, in support of patients receiving social prescribing from the Doctors Surgery adjoining our Track 2000 development.
Overcoming barriers
Adopting a person-centric approach, we regularly support
initiatives that champion voices and opportunities for under-
represented individuals and demographics; removing barriers to participation.
Examples:
Purchasing awning for Age Cymru’s Rural Advice, enabling the van to operate within rural communities during adverse weather conditions. The initiative targets rural isolation by providing information around Age Cymru’s events, advice around bills, and general support for aging individuals.
Paid training, CSCS card funding, and employability support (i.e., mock interviews) for members of EYST (charity supporting ethnic minority individuals).
