JG Hale has received four site nominations for the National Considerate Constructors Leading Lights awards ceremony, held in Kimpton Clocktower Hotel, Manchester, on the 24^th April 2024. The prestigious scheme recognises outstanding projects, individuals, and impact associated with a scheme’s delivery, such as community led engagement, innovation, and green initiatives.

Projects for nomination include:

• Timber Frame Houses at Metal Street, a project for Hafod. The scheme provided 20 affordable flats, built across a 3-storey block. Built from timber frame, with solar PV panels installed to the roof, the energy efficient homes are helping to tackle rising energy costs among residents. With community engagement at it’s core, Project Manager Steve Jones liaised with a nearby school to name the development “Ty Lleuad” (in keeping with its historical context).

•  The Redevelopment of County Flats, Sandfields; a scheme for Port Talbot based Housing Association Tai Tarian. Based in the heart of Sandfields, the project will provide an energy efficient transformation for the existing 72 flats, incorporating environmentally friendly features such as thermal upgrades, solar PV panels, double-glazed windows and EV car charging ports. The finished scheme will see the introduction of a further 55 newly built properties, which will benefit from Air Source Heat Pumps, a system that absorbs heat from the outside air, to repurpose as hot water and heat for the home.
•  Affordable Homes at Glan yr Ithon, Llandrindod Wells; expanding Newydd Housing Association’s new homes in the Powys region. Incorporating Air Source Heat Pumps, and solar PV panels, the second phase of the Glan yr Ithon development has added a further 79 houses, flats, and bungalows to the existing 55 homes built by JG Hale during the first phase of the project. Adding to the natural landscape, the development houses extensive SUDS features, swales, rainwater attenuation tanks, rain gardens and permeable roads and driveways.
• Former Iorwerth Jones Centre, a development for Cardiff City Council. The 20 new affordable homes will each be fitted with Air Source Heat Pumps, contributing towards the reduction of energy bills and fuel poverty; whilst simultaneously decreasing carbon emissions. Designed with a fabric first approach, each home’s energy performance will exceed Building Regulations, achieving an EPC A classification.

On the night of the ceremony, JG Hale will compete against fellow construction companies, UK wide, against the following awards:

• Workforce Category: Physical Wellbeing Award, Mental Health Award, and the Diversity and Inclusion Award.
•     Community Categories: Community Engagement Award, Local Sourcing Award, Community Enrichment Award.
• Environmental Category: Natural Environment Award, Enhancement and Energy Efficiency Award, and Plastic Reduction Award.

Award categories reflect each of the CCC Scheme’s Code of Practice areas: Caring for the Environment, Valuing the Workforce, and Respecting the Community.
