A community of many voices at Bute Street

Hale are honoured to share that our Bute Street development for Cardiff Council has been nominated for a “Social Impact Award”, at the upcoming Construction Excellence Wales Awards 🥁 .

Butetown is renowned for being a close-knit, multicultural and vibrant community; blending an array of cultures and ethnicities, with South Wales Islamic Centre situated just next door to site. Hale therefore prioritised encompassing the many voices and thoughts of the local community surrounding the project; into the planning of all social value activities.

Led by local need, every decision around engagement was made with the community at it’s heart. Initiatives  centred around employability, poverty reduction, and celebrating diversity, arts and culture. Collaborations and impact examples include:

  • A pilot cooking programme for young Muslim individuals, working with EYST (a charitable organisation providing holistic and culturally sensitive education, employment, health and community support for ethnic minority individuals and groups).
  • Support for the city wide food partnership, working with Butetown Community Centre Food Pantry and EYST’s young person’s cooking programme.
  • Sponsorship of block play sessions for pupils at St Patrick’s Primary.
  • Working with Tanio Cymru to creation of a mural, inspired by the resident’s of Nelson House – who will be moving into the completed Bute Street development when completed. Additionally, Dionne worked with local comprehensive school’s to deliver the city wide “Shape my street” campaign.

The nomination is a huge testament to the fantastic social impact that Dionne Herbert and the wider team have delivered across Butetown 🎉.

We’re looking forward to celebrating alongside so many inspiring schemes from across Wales at the awards in June.
